Janina Schweitzer is a German mezzo-soprano from Bonn.

Her particular passion is the great romantic and late romantic operas of the German and French repertoire as well as the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. She also has a broad song repertoire and is known for her vocal versatility.

She is currently a member of the Swiss Opera Studio Bern/Biel (2024/25).

​

In 2024 she made her debut at the Staatstheater Darmstadt in a lead role in the experimental contemporary opera Freedom Collective by Davor Vincze. In 2023 she took on the title role in the world premiere Daphnes Garten in a co-production of the Klagenfurter Ensemble with the Landestheater der Autor:innen Burgenland. In the same year, she appeared as a performance artist in the exhibition 54 Hours Performances at the Folkwang Museum Essen, curated by Marina Abramović, where she gave a solo performance with singing for six hours a day for nine consecutive days. She was also active as a guest singer in several opera choirs.

During her studies, she took on roles in Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges and played Hippolyta in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. She is also fascinated by directing: in 2019, she was assistant director for the children's opera Der Kleine und Otello at the Baden-Baden Easter Festival.

In 2024, Janina Schweitzer won the Grand Prix Opéra and the Audience Award at the Concours International de Chant George Enesco in Paris as well as the Musica Le Mans Talent Prize.

After graduating from high school, she first studied physics before starting her vocal studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts in 2017. There she received vocal coaching by Cynthia Jacoby-Deventer and KS Wolfgang Millgramm. Master classes and private studies with artists

such as Caroline Merz and Gabriele Lechner expanded her artistic development. In 2023 she was a scholarship holder of the Lotte Lehmann Academy and in 2024 she was a participant in the Operncampus 3303 in cooperation with the Theater St. Gallen.
